Speech title: Non-surfactant Emulsion as Alternative Fuel for Diesel Engine

Abstract: Water-in-diesel emulsion fuel (W/D) is one of the promising methods for reducing the exhaust emission of a diesel engine. The combustion efficiency of W/D is profoundly affected by the water percentage and water droplet size of the emulsion fuel. An additive known as the surfactant is usually added to stabilise the emulsion for a longer time. The cost of surfactant is generally high, thus restraining emulsion fuel for further utilisation as an alternative fuel. With the aim to remove the dependency on surfactant, a device named as Real-Time Non-Surfactant Emulsion Fuel Supply System (RTES) has been proposed. The system uses a DC motor with a speed range between 2500 rpm to 5000 rpm. It is also equipped with an ultrasonic transducer and water injection system. In this study, water droplet size of emulsion fuel produced at respectively 2500 rpm, 3000 rpm, 3500 rpm, 4000 rpm, 4500 rpm, and 5000 rpm and constant ultrasonic power of 100% were measured using Keyence VHX-200E microscope. At 5000 rpm, the smallest size of water droplets ranges between 4.70~16.28μm has been formed. Each variable speed tested on the emulsion produce different range of water droplet size. This result might be useful to set a suitable parameter for RTES to produces emulsion fuel that can give higher engine performance.
